Our Lady, Co-Redemptrix...

The following is an excerpt from Our Lady: Queen of the Religious Life, by Fr. Louis Colin C.SS.R.

Mother, queen, servant: the triple crown on the brow of Our Lady! The mother is at the disposal of her children, as a queen is at the service of her people. The Virgin of Nazareth knew this and never forgot it. Was it not at the Annunciation, at her consecration as Mother of God and sovereign of the universe, that she took the title of servant—Ecce ancilla?

On the supernatural plane and in the economy of sal­vation, the devotion of our Mother and the governmental action of our queen consists in her twofold function of "co-redemptrix" and "co-sanctificatrix."

     It is the traditional doctrine of the Church that the Virgin co-operated with Christ in the salvation of mankind, that Jesus associated her in His work of redemption.

"The Virgin of sorrows participated with Christ in the work of redemption," declared Pius XI.[1] As Benedict XV had said before him: "Such was her union with Christ suffering and dying that she suffered almost to the point of death. She so completely abdicated her maternal rights over her Son for the salvation of men, and so immolated that Son—as far as it depended on her—in order to appease Divine Justice, that it can be rightly said that with Him she redeemed the human race."[2]

Mary's appellation, "the new Eve," has been expounded a hundred and a thousand times by the Fathers and Doctors of the Church. It marks the effective role of Our Lady in the salvation of the world. "Per Evam, interitus; per Mariam, salus." Adam and Eve caused the destruction of mankind; Jesus and Mary redeemed it.

If the Virgin has really and physically contributed to the temporal generation of the Son of God, she must by way of natural consequence, co-operate in the mystery of the redemption, the extension and culmination of the Incarnation. It is, then, through a choice, inspired by love for Mary and the will to glorify her, that the Trinity decreed her effective participation in the raising up of mankind.[3]

Salve Regina, Mater . . . vita: our "life," a word weighted with meaning, one that is understood fully only by admitting the direct intervention of Our Lady in the work of our spiritual generation.

"Virgin co-redemptrix!" Certain Mariologists hesitate to use this term, fearing to detract from the power and the redemptive efficacy of the Saviour. This is a scruple which we must respect without, however, sharing it. A number of theologians have not rejected this appellation, which needs only clarification to justify it.[4]

First of all, it is important to note what belongs properly and exclusively to Christ, then to reject all doubtful or fraudulent interpretations of the expression "Mary co-redemptrix."

The redemptive work—insofar as it was essential—belongs directly and uniquely to the Saviour; it had no need of any exterior aid or of any complement to be fully efficacious; by itself alone it would have sufficed abundantly and would in strict justice have merited, ex condigno, the redemption of mankind and its reintegration in the original order—so much for incontestable truths. It is absolutely un­questionable that Jesus Christ alone could save us.

However, would it be impossible, on a lower plane and without doing harm to the divine prerogatives of Jesus, to attribute to the Virgin a secondary role, not simply figurative, but executory? Her intervention, integrating itself in the redemptive action of the Saviour, while being part of it would remain totally subordinated to it and would draw all its saving efficacy solely from the merits of the Redeemer. It was an intimate and simultaneous collaboration which would detract in no way from the primacy of the Son and would greatly honor the mother.

In short, two great redemptive powers, doubtless distinct and unequal: the one divine, infinite, plenary and sovereignly efficacious by itself, the other human, limited, shared, drawing all its value from the first, were joined in their activity and together brought about a common and unique work of redemption.

A contemporary Mariologist named Dillenschneider has made very clear the part which belongs to Mary in this collaboration of the Son and the mother. "First of all, God ordains redemption by His Son for the sanctification of Mary; then He orients that same redemption, with which this time Mary is associated, to the salvation of other men. Christ in His primary intention, immolates Himself for the Virgin; then, in a secondary intention, together with her, for the redemption of the rest of mankind. The Father accepts the sacrificial offering of His Son in favor, first of all, of the preserving redemption of Mary; then, in union with the offering of the same Victim by Our Lady, to the profit of the reparatory redemption of the rest of mankind."[5]

It is thus that Mary merited for us, by a merit of fittingness, the graces which Jesus merited for us by a merit of justice. Quae Christus de condigno, haec Maria meruit de congruo.[6]

Why, then, should we refuse Our Lady that beautiful and expressive title of co-redemptrix?

This role of co-redemptrix is perfected and crowned in Our Lady by her function as co-sanctificatrix. Here again, the work of our salvation belongs in the first place to Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost; but the Virgin does not remain alien to this divine action on our souls; she co-operates in it intimately, to such a point that all supernatural life in its origin, its growth, its plenitude, its goal, depends necessarily on her royal and maternal intervention. Across the centuries she distributes to all generations everything that she merited on the summit of Calvary. The expression "Treasury of all graces," one that is found frequently nowadays, may also be seen in the writings of ancient Mariologists.[7] The universal mediation of Mary is a commonly accepted doctrine in our time. Mediatrix omnium gratiarum. Lex orandi, lex credendi.

Our Lady appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré with arms extended and luminous rays streaming from her hands—a symbol of her royal munificence in the granting of divine graces.

If Christ is the Head of the Mystical Body, Our Lady is the neck, through which passes the total influx from the Head.[8] She is the channel that branches from God made man, from whom flows all supernatural life, the channel which day and night provides new sustenance for poverty-stricken mankind.

"By order of God nothing is granted to us except through Mary," wrote Leo XIII.[9] Our Lady distributes divine graces "to whom she wills, as she wills, as much as she wills, and when she wills" (Saint Louis de Montfort[10]). Everything good and every gift in the order of grace which any saint has ever received from God, has come to him through Mary, Saint Alphonsus declares.[11]

Saint Bernard makes two similar observations: Before reaching us, "every grace has passed through the Heart of Jesus and the hands of His mother";[12] and: "Such is the will of God, that we receive all through Mary."[13]

This ministry of universal provider finds its origin and its explanation in the twofold maternity of the Virgin and her role as co-redemptrix.

One of the most marvelous and the most consoling privileges accorded to Mary in view of or in virtue of her divine maternity is her right to universal intervention in the economy of salvation. "From the moment she became the mother of the Redeemer, the august Virgin had, so to speak, jurisdiction over the temporal advent of the Holy Spirit, so that no one obtains any grace from God without the intervention of this great and tender mother" (Saint Bernardine of Siena[14]).

In giving us the Saviour, would she not have acquired, by this alone, the right to dispose of all the graces of which Christ is the author? Whoever possesses a source can at his will channel the waters and irrigate his land with them.

"Since God has once willed to give us Jesus Christ through the Blessed Virgin, this order never changes and the gifts of God are never taken back. In virtue of the fact that it pleased God to dwell in her, Mary received in a certain sense jurisdiction over all graces; for, since Christ came forth from her womb, together with Him all heavenly gifts proceed from her, as from a divine ocean, declares Saint Alphonsus.[16]

Even the human maternity of Our Lady would make her the first steward and housekeeper in the kingdom of God. She fills this office "so to speak, by maternal right."[17] Every mother has not only the right but the obligation to provide for the many necessities of her little one. It would be a crime to fail in that obligation. Before his birth and during his first years, the child depends entirely on his mother. She must clothe him, feed him, guard him, protect him, and care for him; it is for her to watch over his physical, intellectual, moral, social, religious formation. For the fulfillment of these obligations, every mother is a born nurse and teacher.

In the supernatural order, by reason of his basic inability to attempt anything and to accomplish anything of himself, the Christian remains a child even to his death. "Our sufficiency is from God" (II Cor. 3:5). Everything comes to him from his heavenly Father and from his mother, Mary. It is for her to keep the family table set and ready, and to serve mankind at it. The Virgin is perpetually "bringing forth humanity, in whom she forms and develops the total Christ,"[18] even to the end of the world.

"Here it is a question of finding the basis for Mary's role as Mother of God in her initial purity; of basing her function as co-redemptrix on her divine maternity; of founding her task as mediatrix on her title of co-redemptrix, since everything in her has reference to this fourfold attribute" (Sertillanges[19]).

Therefore the universal mediation of Our Lady would be only the direct conclusion of her co-redemption. Since she merited the salvation of humanity, it is altogether true to say that she should effect it afterwards, de facto, by communicating all saving graces to each soul.

"In virtue of the communion of sorrows and of will which attached her to Christ, Mary merited to become the most worthy redemptrix of the fallen world, and consequently, the dispenser of all the graces which Jesus acquired for us by His bloody death. Because she surpassed all other creatures by her holiness and by her union with Christ, and because she has been invited by Christ to participate in the work of our salvation, she merits for us de congruo, as they say, what Christ merits for us de condigno, and she is the principal minister in the distribution of graces" (Pius X[20]).

Tradition has not erred in seeing in the two Gospel episodes—the Visitation and the Wedding at Cana—the symbol and the prelude to the universal mediation of Mary.

The visit of the Virgin to her cousin Elizabeth was not simply a journey of politeness or courtesy. Undertaken under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost and with the motive of charity, it contains a mystery of graces and of blessings. Our Lady was hastening to bring, and to give, the Christ whom she had conceived. The waters were beginning to spread over souls from that divine spring which was the Saviour and which arose in her virginal womb. Elizabeth, filled with the spirit of God at the salutation of the Virgin, spoke in prophecy and the precursor John was sanctified and leaped with joy in his mother's womb. It will be the same every time Mary comes upon the earth to bring Christ and His grace.

Cana reserved for us a new surprise and a precious lesson. At a wedding supper, a banal incident, disagreeable both for the spouse and for the guests—the failure of the wine—furnished the Mother of Jesus with an occasion for manifesting the delicate sentiments of her heart and for exercising her office of advocate—advocata nostra. Mindful of everything, sensitive to the least annoyance, of her own accord, without being asked, she took the initiative and quite simply sought the intervention of her Son. She re­sponded to His apparent refusal by an increase of con­fidence in Jesus and of sympathy for her hosts; and con­trary to all expectations, the miracle was performed. That day Mary publicly inaugurated her ministry of universal clemency.[21]

TRUTH
Veronica - She wants to give to all a simple truth from the Father. Our Lady says that much has been questioned by man of Her immaculate conception of Jesus. And also Her birth.
    Now Our Lady said that the Father knew before Her birth and the birth of all on earth what would transpire in time to come.
    Therefore, Her birth was not by accident, because before time came, it was all deemed to be. Therefore, the questioning also of the birth of Her Son would be most easy to understand, Our Lady said, if you know the power of the Father. For nothing is impossible with God.
    The world needed to be saved. The gates of Heaven needed to be opened to a sinful man. Therefore, the Father deemed to send His Son to earth and planned before "My birth," Our Lady says--Her birth, that She should be there to bring forth this heavenly Being Who would be known as the Son of Man and the Son of God.
    It was the plan of the Father to try to teach man and lead him back to the road to the Kingdom which had been shut to him. And because of his evil ways and his turning to satan, he had lost that road and the keys had been taken from him temporarily.
    Therefore, when, Our Lady said, She saw Her Son sacrificed upon the wood, She suffered greatly. But Her suffering and Her joy was intermingled, for She was given the knowledge before the birth of the Son that He would come to save all mankind. Therefore, when He returned to the Father, Her heart was lightened, knowing that She would remain but a short time and join Him in the Kingdom. So the loss was but a temporary heartache to Her.
    Our Lady knows that many question this. It is only because satan wishes to place doubt and destroy the truth. So Our Lady asks that you keep in your heart the truth and be not swayed by scientific minds that have been given great knowledge, but never the truth. - December 30, 1972

ONLY CHILD
