Senator Dodd opposes Church on abortion ...

The Norwich Bulletin reported on June 1, 2004:

Sen. Christopher J. Dodd wouldn't answer directly whether he would continue to receive Holy Communion even though he favors keeping abortion legal -- a position in conflict with Roman Catholic Church doctrine that holds abortion to be murder.
     "I'm a father, a husband, a Catholic and a United States senator," the Connecticut Democrat said in a written response. "I've never worn my religious convictions on my sleeve because I consider it a private matter."
     The issue arose last month when a top Vatican official said politicians who publicly support abortion rights are "not fit" to receive communion, one of seven Catholic sacraments, because their position clashes with church doctrine regarding abortion. A task force of U.S. bishops is trying to decide what that should mean for politicians like Dodd, who is seeking re-election to a fifth term in November, and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
     Bishop Michael R. Cote, bishop of Norwich, won't comment until the task force reports to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the conference discusses the issue during its meeting next month, spokeswoman Jacqueline Keller said.

     A top Vatican official close to the Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Francis Arinze, emphasized today that priests must not give communion to pro-abortion politicians who claim to be Catholic.
     Arinze, a Nigerian who has been mentioned as a possible successor to Pope John Paul II, did not comment specifically on whether presidential candidate John Kerry should be excommunicated.  But the inference was clear - and Reuters news wire as well as others said the Cardinal's remarks were a clear shot across Kerry's bow.   The cardinal left no doubt about Kerry by saying that an "unambiguously pro-abortion" politician "is not fit" to receive communion.
     "If they should not receive, then they should not be given," he noted.   The cardinal's directive "could influence the U.S. presidential race," Reuters observed.
     Already several leading Catholic laity and clergy have told Kerry that he is excommunicated from the Church because of his abortion stance.   Kerry, meanwhile, planned to campaign with pro-choice groups today and denounce President Bush's greatest success in human rights: a ban on gruesome partial-birth abortions.

A Catholic may never vote in favor of an immoral law, such as legalized abortion: 

"Man may never obey a law which is in itself immoral, and such is the case of a law which would admit in principle the liceity of abortion. Nor can he take part in a propaganda campaign in favor of such a law or vote for it. Moreover, he may not collaborate in its application. It is, for instance, inadmissible that doctors or nurses should find themselves obligated to cooperate closely in abortions and have to choose between the law of God and their professional situation." (“Declaration on Procured Abortion,” Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, November 18, 1974, #22.)  

Those Catholics who perform an abortion, or are accomplices to an abortion, receive the automatic punishment of excommunication. Pope John Paul II writes:

"The Church’s canonical discipline, from the earliest centuries, has inflicted penal sanctions on those guilty of abortion. This practice, with more or less severe penalties, has been confirmed in various periods of history. The 1917 Code of Canon Law punished abortion with excommunication. The revised canonical legislation continues this tradition when it decrees that ‘a person who actually procures an abortion incurs automatic (Latae sententiae) excommunication’ (Canon 1398). The excommunication affects all those who commit this crime with knowledge of the penalty attached and thus includes those accomplices without whose help the crime would not have been committed (Canon 1329). By this reiterated sanction, the Church makes clear that abortion is a most serious and dangerous crime, thereby encouraging those who commit it to seek without delay the path of conversion. In the Church the purpose of the penalty of excommunication is to make an individual fully aware of the gravity of a certain sin and then to foster genuine conversion and repentance." (Pope John Paul II, encyclical Evangelium Vitae, #62.) 

 

Send a letter or FAX to Senator Dodd's Bishop, Bishop Michael Cote, and ask Bishop Cote why he is opposing God and the Pope by allowing an unambiguously pro-abortion politician from receiving sacrilegious Communion:
