Democrat John Kerry - a pro-choice Catholic whose abortion views have prompted some Catholic leaders to say they want to bar him from Communion - yesterday received the sacrament during Easter Mass in Boston.
     "It was a wonderful service," Kerry said after the Mass was celebrated at Boston's Paulist Center by the Rev. John Ardis, who has said he was "inundated" with calls urging him to refuse to give Communion to Kerry. 
    Applause and cheers from the congregation accompanied Kerry's departure from the church. 
     St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke and Nebraska Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz say they'd refuse Communion to Kerry. Boston Archbishop Sean O'Malley has said all pro-choice officials should voluntarily "refrain" from Communion but has refused to comment on Kerry specifically.

Patrick Buchanan clearly points out:

Whose duty is it to correct Kerry and, if need be, sanction him? The duty belongs to Archbishop Sean O'Malley of Boston and the conference of U.S. Catholic bishops. For Kerry is now a candidate for an office where his decisions on law, funding and Supreme Court nominees may determine whether countless unborn children live or perish. This one is going to separate the Cardinal Woolseys from the Thomas Mores.... But the real problem is not Kerry or his Catholic colleagues like Kennedy, Dodd and Daschle who vote and, one assumes, believe as he does. The problem rests with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Many prelates have failed dismally in their pastoral duty to correct, admonish and sanction our Catholic lords temporal, even as some failed to protect Catholic children from predator-priests. ("Fr. St. Augustine condemns cowardly pastors with these words:

"Who is the hireling who, seeing the approach of the wolf, takes flight? He who seeks himself and does not seek what is of Jesus Christ; he who does not dare to frankly admonish the sinner (1 Tim. 5:20).  See, someone has sinned, gravely sinned; he should be admonished, excluded from the Church. But, excluded from the Church, he will become its enemy and will try to ensnare it and harm it where he can. Now the hireling, the one who seeks himself and not what is of Jesus Christ, will be silent and will not give any admonition, in order not to lose what he seeks, namely the advantage of personal friendship, and in order to avoid the unpleasantness, worry and personal enmity.  The wolf at that moment takes hold of the sheep to throttle them.... You are silent O hireling, and do not admonish.... Your silence is your flight. You are silent, you are afraid. Fear is the flight of the soul." - St. Augustine, Tractatus in Joannem, XLVI 7-8.
