Replies to Colin Donovan, part 1
Recently, Colin Donovan wrote an article for the ewtn.org website regarding Our Lady of the Roses apparitions, in addition to giving several answers in the “experts forum” that contradict Church tradition and Our Lady of the Roses message. We immediately noticed that Mr. Donovan had committed the same mistake as the Diocese of Brooklyn did in 1975 when, in the diocese's official statement, Veronica’s last name was misspelled (though the Brooklyn Diocese claims to have made a “thorough investigation”). We pray that those who have been misled by Mr. Donovan’s article against Our Lady of the Roses will prayerfully and studiously consider the replies we make to Mr. Donovan’s objections.
“Veronica's Lady is not only ignorant of English, but of Catholic terminology, history and theology.” - Mr. Donovan
Common
spoken English
The accusation by Mr. Donovan that Our Lady of the
Roses uses simple language is no argument. In fact, when Our Lady appeared
to St. Bernadette in Lourdes, France, Our Lady spoke in the dialect of “patois”,
the dialect of Bernadette. Bernadette could not speak, read or write French,
but only patois. The intellectuals of those days made the accusation against
this true apparition that Our Lady should have spoken in French, but she did
not; Our Lady spoke in the “unrefined” dialect of patois. In the words of St.
Bernadette herself:
“Through all her visits, she had spoken, not the flawless French of the town officials, but the homely words of my Lourdes, patois. Holiness and prayer are simple. God's Mother taught me so.”
Likewise, Our Lady of the Roses uses common spoken English. And this is a “scandal” to some.
Catholic
terminology
Our Lady of the Roses is far from ignorant of
Catholic terminology. In fact, her message is a veritable encyclopedia of
Catholic concepts, presented in everyday spoken English. Her message is easily
understood, even by those without a theological background. The extensive use of
Catholic terminology is evident to anyone who has read the messages. The
following are just a few of the many moral and theological concepts mentioned
and explained by Our Lady of the Roses: abortion, Adam and Eve, angels and
demons, atonement, apostasy, blasphemy, clerical celibacy, the Commandments,
Communion in the hand, the communion of saints, contraception, diabolical
possession, divine justice, faith – hope – charity, the Holy Eucharist, the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass, excommunication, human soul infused at the precise moment
of conception, time vs. eternity, false obedience vs. true obedience, Fatima –
Lourdes – Garabandal apparitions, the test of Abraham, “many” versus “all”, free
will, freemasonry, general judgment and particular judgment, grace and merit,
charity and fraternal correction, the Catholic hierarchy, Heaven - hell -
purgatory - limbo, homosexuality, Immaculate Conception – Perpetual Virginity –
Assumption of Our Lady, Latin as the universal language of the Church, heresy,
indulgences, love of God – love of neighbor, martyrdom, modernism, morality,
mortal sin and venial sin, mystical body of Christ, natural law, occasions of
sin, original sin, perseverance, poverty, the priesthood, providence,
reincarnation, religious vows, reparation, resurrection of the body,
resurrection of Christ, divinity of Christ, the Sacraments, sacramentals,
sacrilege, sanctifying grace and actual grace, scandal, schism, the Second
Coming, seminaries, separated brethren and ecumenism, the Trinity, women
priests, fallen nature, value of suffering, faith and tradition, prayer and
works, and papal primacy.
We will answer other objections of Mr. Donovan in future installments.
